In LA Co., I found Doheny State Beach, near Dana Pt., which looks really nice to me--I like a few trees! Google up "Family Vacation Getaways Doheny" (the URL is too long to post well) and see what you think. It's near Capistrano Mission and the petting zoo, and Legoland, I think. Sounds like there are things to do. Surfing on the North of the beach--as I recall, Doheny is a pretty good surf beach.

Beach Camp
Here's the skinny. There aren't a lot of tent-camping areas on the beach in SoCal. In San Diego Co, I could only find South Carlsbad and San Elijo. They both seem to be rather parking-lot-like from what I can tell, on a bluff up above a l-o-n-g wooden walkway down to the sand. Maybe we can get Sally to go scout them out.

Try this.
It looks good to me! Good thing we're checking things out early thanks to Jeff b/c this one fills up quickly it says. Maybe Sal better check out the San Diego ones first in case she has to stay there.
BTW- That link didn't work for me until I took off the last section.
I've heard that Doheny is a good beach for beginner surfers which is what I am still after all these years. So I like it and so would anyone else who wants to learn this summer.
It looks nice, I guess. You know I love the beach, but I for one would like something a little more 'wilderness-y.' I think if I'm going to go camping I'd rather do it more than 3 miles from a mall and fine dinning. I'm sure we would still have fun, but it looks like any where in So-cal is going to be crowded and not far from civilization.
There really are some amazing camping places super cheap and close to Cedar. Great hikes, lakes (with beaches), and fun. I'm just saying.
While I grant that Cedar has beautiful surroundings, I fear that it has sucked the California out of the girl. I must have been mistaken, but it seems like you were trying to say that the shore of the lake is the same as the beach... What the...!
:)This makes me laugh everytime I read the comments! I am just excited that we are doing something tell me where you all will be and I'll be there with 4 kids and maybe a husband?
You can't do real camping with children can you? Someone who has kids can answer that. I suppose you could do it but it seems to me it would be terrible. I'm not thinking of this as camping I'm thinking of it as we go to the beach for a few days.
I just went camping only for 2 days but it was "real" camping not even pottys! We all had a blast, so my answer is SURE you can.
I am for sure on Yes I want there to be bathrooms and showers. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Just think if one of us girls was surfin the crimson wave. (knock on wood) We're talking 5 days or something aren't we?
Ohhh, Kate, do you have any idea how bad you just grossed out your brother?!?
Just don't blame me when we are surrounded--five feet away on each side--with loud drunken parting beach campers. As long as I have something decent to sleep on and a toilet I'll be fine. It's YOUR screaming tired babies kept up all night that I’m thinking of.
PS--I think that this is the first time in my life that this predominantly girly family has ever talked about periods 'in-front' of Jeff, so I'd say he's gotten off pretty easy.
Don't ever speak of that again. If you're uncomfortable just remember that I suggested I a very comfortable house in Mexico. But that's true we don't want to be next to a bunch of drunk people in motor homes... Is there a tents only area?
Hey if we have to live with it I don't have too much sympathy (like any)for someone that just has to hear the word.
Maybe we could call the reservations people and ask if there are partyers and if alcohol is allowed etc. Is 5 feet on each side how it really is? I pictured like sites where you at least can't see people right next to you even if you can hear them. I can call starting tomorrow but tonight is pack mtg. and for those of you that don't know- I'm the Cub Committee Chair so I'm in charge of Cub Scouts. It's a little stressful when Pack Mtg comes around.
I didn't know you were Committee Chair...that was a Dad job forEVER. Have fun with it.
I thought I'd run down there in the next couple of weeks and see what it looks like. I think some of it's tent-only.
Do we want to see if Nancee and her clan are interested in coming too, or not? Although Krisy's likely to have a tiny one at that point...
