So who likes Randa's cruise idea when Amy turns 40? We should start planning for it now. Or at least saving money for it.

I like!

I like Big Time!

Hellooo! Where is everybody??

Mom said...

Never saw the original idea! What was it? Sounds good so far.

It's going on a cruise when Amy turns 40. Or thereabouts. We still have to make the plans but off to a good start :)

Sounds good to us! But cruise to where? Bare in mind that most cruises require a passport... unless you're going to Alaska or something.

Sally said...

I need more info. Does this mean an all girls' cruise, or everyone?

Where to?

I love the general idea, but I don't remember much about it.

Sorry for the delay. We were in Mexico, AND set a new record for the time it took us to cross back over--close to 4 hours in the car--not fun!

Well the post has been up since Tues. but so sorry you had that long trip back! Yuck!
We were thinking couples (mom and Randa are a couple unless either of them gets married before then). Obviously you can bring a baby/toddler if you'd like but Amy and I would plan to leave the kids home.
Where to is up for discussion I guess. I'm not picky and am fine getting a passport. Alaska would actually be awesome!
The other discussion would be how long.

I feel like the easiest thing will be going somewhere that docks from California. And most of those cruises are to Mexico or Alaska. All of the Caribbean island cruises usually dock from Florida or Puerto Rico and that'd be expensive and time consuming to fly somewhere before docking on the ship. Would it be cheapest to book way in advance or to do it last minute for the last minute deals? I'll ask around to my friends who do a lot of cruises. The only concern for us will be not knowing if I'll be pregnant or having a new born a year from now! But we'll just plan as though it's not happening ha.

I am "all aboard". My only concern will be school schedule. GRRRROOOSSS.
I don't know how long my Winter and Spring breaks will be, but I think either would be great.
When I went in 2007 with Christina we did a 4 night cruise from Long Beach to Ensenada with a stop in Catalina. I felt like it was a really good amount of time.
I think we booked in February for late April, and it was something around $400 each.
I think we would have to have passports for that. Mine expires in January, wahwah.

Mom said...

I'd be up for either, but if we're voting, I'd like to see Alaska--I've always wanted to do that one. I've heard it's beautiful!

Sounds super fun! I guess we could play it by ear whether to leave James or take him, though everyone I can think to leave him with will be on the cruise....hmmm.

What I'm wondering more about is what time of year do we think this would be? We've got school breaks to think about, pregnancies, dissertation defenses, etc. Are we talking right around Amy's birthday? Or more in summer time when the beach camping would normally be? Or some other time..?

Lets figure out when everyone can go and go then. Amy and I are probably the most flexible. I like the idea of around 4 days or so. I don't know how long Alaskan cruises are. Maybe "I'll-ask" Haha get it? Maybe we need to find out when Spring Breaks are next year?

Sally said...

It's also Eter's 40th next year, but not until December. Just saying.
I should be able to find out when my spring break is pretty easily. I think matching up mine, Randa's, and mom's will be pretty hard. But I just remembered that I should be on fellowship, so I don't really have to be on campus at certain times.
I'm sure it's cheaper if we don't go during the summer.
Going to Alaska and back will for sure take more than 4 days--which means more expensive, too.
If we do Mexico, I'd rather go down to Cabo at least. I've done the Ensenada one before.

I looked up a couple Carnival cruises. The first was 4 day Baja Mexico (found out it's the one Sally said she'd rather not do) stops in Catalina and Ensenada. $299 per person best price. Second, Alaska. Leaves from Seattle. 6-9 days. 7 day-$650 per person. I'll check Cabo.

Kate said...

Cabo- "Mexican Riviera 7 day cruise" $544 per person. This is just Carnival but I wonder what cruises are out there that are like 4 or 5 days besides the Ensenada one.

Kate said...

here's a 4 day one that goes up the pacific coast. Could be kinda fun...

about $300

I didn't mean to sound like I wouldn't go on the Ensenada one. I just would rather do something new if possible. I think that if we leave from SD, there's a different one. Let me check. Also, the prices really fluctuate throughout the year, and I see a lot of cruise specials.

Sally said...

So, I haven't found any cruises out of SD, which is weird because the ships are docked here all the time. I guess maybe it is just a port of call on some cruises? I only checked Carnival, though.

hey sorry I haven't been commenting, I have it linked to my email so I can read them w/ out signing in! I have been EXTRA swamped right now. It all sounds great I love the idea of the cruise! I'd of course like to keep it as cheap as we can and as long and FUN as possible too! haha thats one of my daily goals! I'd rather not go to Alaska but thats just B/c I LOVE the beach so much! I'll go wherever you are all going with a smile on! And be thrilled to be on a trip and even try to be happy about being OLD!!!!

Kate said...

I found a few cruises out of San Diego but so far they've all been super expensive.

Kate said...

Also, I LOVE a deal but I'm worried if we wait for a last minute thing we won't be able to pull it off with this many people. So hopefully we can find a great deal and still be able to plan ahead.

Sally said...

It definitely is cheaper if we do more than two people to a room. Not sure how many are willing to do so, but just saying. You can bunk 4 to a room, and it's a lot cheaper than if you put in 2. Generally.
It's also cheaper not to have a port hole. When I went, I didn't have one, and I didn't miss it. I don't think you spend that much time in the room anyway. They are tiny regardless. If I want to see the water, I can go up on deck anytime.

Kate said...

Lets put all the snoreers together- haha JK. I would take a non-porthole room for sure.

Carrie said...

I get claustrophobic so I'm scared of being too far down on the ship with tiny rooms and no windows! Maybe Jeff and I will venture a couple floors higher :)

Miranda said...

Just checked, my spring break is March 10-18. A bit early for cruising weather. My finals end on May 8. ???

Sally said...

I found out that I got my fellowship--hooray! So, we don't have to worry about spring break for me.
Now, if Eter gets into his program for this year, we will have to work around his... and we won't know that for another month or so.
I don't think we'll need to buy tickets until the fall or something, right?

Mom said...

Congrats Sally! That'll be so good for you! Proud of you both--all.

My break is always the second week of April. Hmmm.

Awesome Sal!
